Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), also referred to as autism, is a neurological disorder which causes developmental disability. Autism affects the way the brain functions, resulting in difficulties with communication and social interaction, and unusual patterns of behaviour, activities and interests. Persons with an Autism Spectrum Disorder have particular communication, social and behavioural characteristics in common. The severity of conditions varies over a wide spectrum. The term Pervasive Developmental Disorder is also used to refer to this disorder spectrum.
Asperger Syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder. It is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction. Those with Asperger Syndrome have restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests, and frequently use language atypically. Language and cognitive development is usually normal, although some persons may have a dual diagnosis of a learning disorder. Some persons with Asperger Syndrome may be physically clumsy.
