Bosom Buddies

An informal gathering of moms and babies, where women can discuss breastfeeding concerns. Experts are invited to speak on topics ranging from baby massage to using a breast pump.

Breastfeeding Consultation

Lactation consultants visit new mothers to promote effective breast-feeding and assessment of infant hydration.

Good Beginnings Program

Good Beginnings offers hands-on assistance to families, overwhelmed by caring for newborns, who aren't getting support from family or friends. Volunteers, screened and trained by VON, visit families with newborns at least once a week to assist the new mom or dad. Families without physicians can get primary health care from a VON nurse practitioner.

Healthy Baby and Me

This project is funded by Health Canada to provide education and support to youth who are expecting a baby or parenting an infant by helping pregnant and parenting youth make healthy choices for their babies and themselves.

On a physician's order, a nurse visits the client at home to monitor fetal heart rate.

Jumpstart

Jumpstart supports the development of child nourishment programs in schools and community organizations, providing access for all children to enjoy healthy, well-balanced food. Jumpstart will develop a plan to secure volunteer support and program funding to start a healthy snack or breakfast program in your community.

Post-natal Care

The VON nurse provides care at home for women and babies who leave hospital within 24 hours of delivery. In addition to looking after the immediate physical needs of the mother and child, the nurse offers support to both parents as they learn to care for their newborn.

Pre-School/School Health Program

In some communities, VON is responsible for comprehensive health promotion and screening programs in schools. In integrated schools, VON can also provide care for children with special needs.

Prenatal Education

In this series of classes, expectant parents learn about development of their baby during pregnancy, good nutrition, physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, preparation for labour and delivery, care of the newborn and parenting skills.

School-Aide Program

VON provides one-on-one nursing support for severely medically fragile children by accompanying them to school and staying with them at school to provide nursing support throughout the day. VON also provides education and training for people who come in contact with developmentally challenged children through the school day.
