Welcome to the VON! Your interest in becoming a VON volunteer is much appreciated. By providing you with an in depth orientation we hope to make your volunteer experience enjoyable and satisfying.
This is the first online course in the Volunteer Center Learning Section. Other online courses include:
V200 – Board Leadership
V301 – Volunteer Visiting
V302 – Meals on Wheels
We hope to be able to provide volunteers with other online courses in the future.
Hopefully, the information provided in this online course will make your volunteer experience enjoyable and satisfying. You will learn more about VON, the value it provides to the community, volunteer commitments and responsibilities. You will also have a greater insight into health topics and situations that will help you to have a meaningful volunteer experience.

Upon completion of these modules, you should be able to:
Module 1 – About VON
- understand some of the VON history;
- understand what programs and activities VON is involved in; and
- understand VON’s current philosophy, strategic direction and values.
Module II – Volunteers in VON
- understand VON’s commitments to volunteers;
- understand responsibilities in the volunteer relationship;
- understand VON policies and guidelines that apply to the delivery of services;
- describe the benefits of volunteering; and
- explain the importance of volunteers as ambassadors.
Module III – Involvement
- understand the responsibility of VON to volunteers;
- understand and explain your responsibility to VON as a volunteer;
- understand the policies and guidelines as they pertain to VON volunteers;
- understand the staff and supervisory arrangement; and
- access volunteer opportunities.
Module IV – Important Facts
- gain an insight into a variety of health problems that you may encounter while volunteering; and
- understand the effects for a variety of conditions and how you may have to respond in certain situations.
Module V – What If
- understand some of the possible situations that could occur while volunteering; and
- apply suggested approaches to specific situations.
1.2 Completing the Course
In order to get the most out of this learning experience read the required readings, respond to the reflective activities, and undertake a knowledge check. 1.3 Course Development
The main course content has been developed by Chris Peacock with the assistance of other staff and volunteers. Jim Pealow assisted with the conversion of the content for delivery of the course in an online environment.
