Letter of thanks to the VON community for supporting our 125-year legacy of care

A message from Peter Currie, Chair, VON Board of Directors and Jo-Anne Poirier, President and CEO, VON Canada

On behalf of the VON Canada Board of Directors and VON’s senior leadership team, we would like to wish our VON community a very happy VON Week and a happy 125th anniversary!

VON Week is all about celebrating the employees and volunteers who are the heart of VON, and as we mark our 125th anniversary this year, I also want to acknowledge all the members of the VON family who came before us over the past 125 years.

To our current VON team, you are part of a strong and proud legacy. You are part of Canadian history and of the future of home and community care in this country.

Our front-line staff and volunteers are the eyes, ears and hands of the organization. You put your clients first and deliver outstanding care every day. It is your smiles, your compassion and your kind words that our clients and their families think of when they think of VON.

Our corporate services and administrative teams working diligently behind the scenes are the backbone of the organization. Clients and families may not know who you are, but they know how important you are to the care that VON provides.

VON has always acted as a guide in the health journeys of Canadians – from infancy to end of life, from world wars to pandemics. Our teams have always been leaders and innovative, solving problematic access to quality care at home or in local communities and challenging how and where care is being delivered. Over the last two years in particular, we’ve seen many examples of adaptation, determination and commitment to our clients by our outstanding staff and volunteers. Every day, they unite around the sole purpose of giving our clients and families their best lives possible.

As the demand for home care continues to soar, we see opportunities to transform the way we deliver care and to make the best home and community care even better. It’s why we are embarking on our latest journey of innovation with our digital health transformation project, which will help to keep care in the familiar and comforting home environment and keep our clients connected to their families, whether their family lives across the street or across the country. To say that we are excited about this next chapter for VON would be an understatement. We look forward to engaging and collaborating with clients, families, and our teams on this journey to lead VON into the future.

In honour of VON Week and our 125th, I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to our staff and volunteers for everything you do for VON and for all the clients and families we serve.

To our donors, partners, funders and broader community, thank you for your continued support of our mission to provide care that makes every day as full of meaning and hope as possible for our clients. You help us bring valued care to clients and their families in the comfort of their homes. We couldn’t do this without you.

With sincere thanks,
Peter Currie
